December MCCA Presidents drafted Mission statement and core beliefs and officially named the project The Michigan Community College Virtual Learning Collaborative
March MCCA Board of Directors approved the initiative and unanimously agreed on an assessment fee to fund early development of the MCCVLC.
Summer MCCA Presidents & Trustees approved the MCCVLC Strategic & Business Plans and appointed Michael Wahl as Executive Director
September 1998 – MCCA secured funding from the Michigan Virtual University - $2.5 million start-up.
Winter MCCVLC website and registration process designed and developed with the assistance of the appropriate professional organizations.
Spring W.K. Kellogg Foundation awarded a grant ($1.97 million) for training and collaborative development of programs.
Summer MCCA Board of Directors approved the MCCVLC Memorandum of Understanding
Summer MCCVLC officially began a pilot project with 12 colleges offering a total of 47 courses on the MCCVLC web site and 45 confirmed enrollments.
July MCCVLC received the 2001 Community College Futures Assembly - Bellwether Award Finalist
June MCCVLC received HLC approval for 22 Michigan community colleges to extend the accreditation status for online programs of study offered through the MCCVLC.
October MCCVLC awarded a FIPSE (Funds for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education) grant to collaboratively develop online student academic support services.
October MCCVLC awarded a state grant to update infrastructure and improve website and registration process, create OER repository and facilitate help desk services.
November MCCVLC officially changed the name to Michigan Colleges Online (MCO)

The MCO student website provides an infrastructure for students to register for courses offered at other community colleges if their course options at their home institution are not available keeping students on their academic track. Currently MCO now has 3,852 courses in the catalog – with over 2750 course offerings each semester. The MCO Memorandum of Understanding was created to assist with a seamless transfer of courses between colleges to satisfy program requirements. The MCO is now also connected to the new MI Transfer data to provide updated transfer equivalencies to inform students registration decisions.

OER Initiative – Since MCO began collecting data from colleges – the usage of OER has increased. Based on an estimated textbook savings – Michigan Community College have saved students a total of $15,861,900 in the past 3 years. We now have 18 colleges reporting usage of OER and other no/low cost textbook by faculty.
The MI OER Summit this fall is scheduled for October 18, 2019 and hosted by Delta College.
