Assessment New curriculum...the bar has been raised. Assessed – beginning, beginning+, working towards, working towards +, secure, secure+ against their year group objectives. All children will be assessed in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and maths over next few weeks. Focus on breadth and depth of understanding, rather than ‘next step’ or ‘harder work’. Information on progress and specific areas for development will be shared in Parents’ Meetings.

What you can do to help English Reading – 20 minutes every day is the ideal. Please sign or initial their diary every day. Discuss television programmes / films – why did that character respond that way? What might happen next? Watch the news, read the newspapers. Consider the reporting style. Discuss the content. Rehearse spellings each day. Work on improving/extending sentences in their writing including Vocabulary, Conjunctions, Openers and Punctuation (VCOP). Use Spellodrome account (same password as Mathletics). Be a role model for reading!

What you can do to help Maths Times tables must be known up to at least 12x12. Estimating, weighing, measuring are all good to discuss and do practically. Must use metric measures. Money – using it in the shops, working out change, adding up bills, questions e.g. if 1 bag of sugar costs 56p, how many will 7 cost? Mental addition, subtraction, multiplication & division. Reading and writing numbers to 1,000,000. Doubling and halving, including decimals. Solving number puzzles e.g. Sudoko. Using their Mathletics account regularly. Any activities linked to cooking.
