1 Year 3/4 Meeting for Parents Tuesday 8 th September 2015 Woodpeckers, Puffins and Jays

2 What we promote Mature and ACTIVE attitude. Responsibility for themselves, their belongings and their actions. Increased independence Contributing to the life of the school. Working with the community.

3 Routines….  Diaries to be handed in every day with evidence of home reading (please initial and write comments) 5 reads per week for a reading star- bookmarks.  Homework to be handed in every Tuesday- completed at lunchtimes if not handed in.  Homework will be given out every Thursday (one maths, one theme based, one set of spellings (which they will record in diaries), big maths sheets and CLIC sheets. Please support as much as you are able (grammar, spellings and presentation).  PE kit in school all the time- spare socks too!  Forest school kit on those days (WP=Wed, P= Thurs, J=Fri).  Any old shirts needed for Art…

4 Important Dates for your Diaries  Trip letter has been given out for tomorrow!  Violin letter and lessons…  Wonderful Wednesdays: please join us (Javelin=23/9, Meteor= 30/9, Gladiator= 7/10, Whittle= 14/10)  Residential 16 th -18 th Sept  Assemblies (1/10= WP, 2/10=Puffins, 20/11= Jays)  Tuesday 6 th October= Cheltenham Literature Festival  Local visits: ad hoc

5 Assessment  Levels have gone…  New curriculum...the bar has been raised.  Assessed – beginning, beginning+, working towards, working towards +, secure, secure+ against their year group objectives.  All children will be assessed in reading, writing and maths over next few weeks.  Focus on breadth and depth of understanding.

6 What you can do to help  Literacy 1.Reading – 20 minutes aloud every day is the ideal. Please sign or initial their diary every day. 2.Discuss television programmes / films – why did that character respond that way? What might happen next? 3.Watch the news, read the newspapers. Consider the reporting style. Discuss the content. 4.Rehearse spelling pattern each day. 5.Work on improving/extending sentences in their writing including Vocabulary, Conjunctions, Openers and Punctuation (VCOP). 6.Use Spellodrome account (same password as Mathletics).

7 What you can do to help  Maths 1.Times tables must be known up to at least 10x10. 2.Estimating, weighing, measuring are all good to discuss and do practically. Must use metric measures. 3.Money – using it in the shops, working out change, adding up bills, questions e.g. if 1 bag of sugar costs 56p, how many will 7 cost? 4.Mental addition, subtraction, multiplication & division. 5.Reading and writing numbers to 100 000. 6.Doubling and halving, including decimals. 7.Solving number puzzles e.g. Sudoko. 8.Using their Mathletics account regularly. 9.Any activities linked to cooking.
