Presentation transcript:

Pablo picasso 25 October 1881 – 8 April 1973 Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, and stage designer, one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century. He is widely known for co-founding the Cubist movement, the invention of constructed sculpture, the co-invention of collage, and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore.

El PERIODO AZUL Blue Period (1901–1904) Somber paintings rendered in shades of blue and blue-green, only occasionally warmed by other colors. Many paintings of gaunt mothers with children date from this period. In his somber/gloomy use of color (and depressing) subject matter—prostitutes & beggars are frequent subjects La Vie The Old Guitarist

El PERIODO ROSADO Rose Period (1904–1906) In an upbeat & optimistic mood, cheery style w/ orange & pink colors, and featuring many circus people, acrobats & harlequins in France. The harlequin, a comedic character usually depicted in checkered patterned clothing, became a personal symbol for Picasso. Influenced by his warm relationship with a French lady he met, and by his increased exposure to French painting. At the Lapin Agile Garçon à la Pipe

El PERIODO de INFLUENCIA AFRICANA African-Influenced Period (1907–1909) Picasso’s African-influenced Period (1907–1909) begins with the two figures on the right in his painting, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, which were inspired by African artifacts. Formal ideas developed during this period lead directly into the Cubist period that follows.

AFRICAN-INFLUENCED PERIOD CONTINUED Although Les Demoiselles is seen as the first Cubist work, Picasso continued to develop a style derived from African art before beginning the Analytic Cubism phase of his painting in 1910. Other works of Picasso's African Period include: Bust of a Woman (1907), and Three Women (1908). Bust of a Woman Three Women

El PERIODO del CUBISMO Cubism Period: Analytic (1909–1912) Synthetic (1912-1919) Analytic cubism - a style developed along with Georges Braque using monochrome brownish and neutral colors. Both artists took apart objects and “analyzed” them in terms of their shapes. Synthetic cubism - a further development of the genre, in which cut paper fragments (often wallpaper or portions of newspaper pages) were pasted into compositions, marking the first use of collage in fine art. Analytic Cubism Synthetic Cubism

CLASICISMO y SURREALISMO El PERIODO DE CLASICISMO y SURREALISMO Classicism & Surrealism Period (After WW-I) “Return to Order” is evident in Picasso’s paintings & drawings from this period. During the 1930s, the minotaur replaced the harlequin as a common motif in his work. His use of the minotaur came partly from his contact with the surrealists, who often used it as their symbol, and it appears in Picasso’s Guernica, his most famous work!
