WHAT IS A LEARNING MENTOR WHAT IS A LEARNING MENTOR? A Learning Mentor provides a complementary service to teachers and other school staff, helping address the needs of children who require help in overcoming barriers to learning both inside and outside school, in order to achieve their full potential. HOW CAN A LEARNING MENTOR HELP? Learning mentors work mainly with children on a one-to-one basis or in small groups, offering support, advice and encouragement. We help to develop positive attitudes, raise self-esteem and confidence.

TRANSITION FROM YEAR 6 TO YEAR 7 During Year 6, the Learning Mentor will work with primary school staff to support pupils who may find the transition to high school difficult. After Key Stage 2 SATS, the Learning Mentor will have regular visits to all pupils at: Crofton, Shay Lane, Sharlston and Walton Junior Schools as well as those pupils in our Extra District Schools. WHAT ELSE? Year 6 Induction Evening Year 6 visits to the Academy Library Year 6 Induction Day (supported by Year 7 buddies) Summer School WHAT HAPPENS IN YEAR 7? In Year 7 the Learning Mentor will continue to support pupils under the direction of the Year Group Manager

QUESTIONS We are sure there are lots of questions you want to ask us when you come on visits. Here are a few to get you started . . . What happens if I get lost? I need the toilet? I forget my homework? I can’t follow my timetable? I have to leave school early? I feel ill at school? I have a medical appointment? I am late for registration? I need to contact home? I feel that I am being bullied?

it takes time to get to know people STARTING OUT There will be lost of new people to get to know Start off the right way – Be friendly and be kind and helpful Remember: it takes time to get to know people

BREAK & LUNCHTIME We use a biometric (finger recognition) cashless system for all meals and snacks HOW DOES IT WORK? Your finger print will be registered onto the system as a set of numbers. (No finger prints will be stored). You will then be given a unique identity number. Money you pay into our revalue machines will then be turned into credits. Don’t worry, you will be shown how to “put money on your finger”! YOU JUST HAVE TO DECIDE . . . Will you buy lunch at school? OR Will you bring sandwiches? Look at our menus – they might help you decide (check out the “Pupil” “Meals” page – menus are accessible via the button at the bottom)
