BELLWORK: 12/3 (get out your vocab squares – I will collect shortly!) What is humanism? Read the handout – “The Importance of Moveable Type and the Printing Press” Describe Gutenberg’s invention of moveable type. How did it work? What was printing like before moveable type? What problems occurred as a result? List three effects of the Printing Press. THINKER: Why is access to books important in Renaissance Europe?

Literature during The Renaissance How the printing press led to the spread of ideas (humanism)

Humanism Humanism focused on: A study of the classics (Greece & Rome) Emphasis on the humanities (grammar, poetry, philosophy, history) Being well-rounded Humanism impacted key developments of the Renaissance  education, literacy, skepticism, reason/logic, art & literature.

The Printing Revolution In 1456, Johann Gutenberg printed the bible using movable metal type on a machine called a Printing Press Printed books became cheaper, more accurate and easier to produce Now, readers gained access to broad range of knowledge (Medicine to Religion) The printing press would greatly contribute to the Reformation of the church.

Renaissance Literature As a result of the printing press, Renaissance literature became more accessible and demonstrated a changing society Renaissance literature was based on humanist ideals and helped spread new ideas and education Today, you are going to read about literature during the Renaissance and it’s impact on society  complete back of worksheet!
