3 Role of the printing press Growth of literacy was stimulated by the Gutenberg printing press. The Bible was printed in English, French, and German. These factors had an important impact on spreading the ideas of the Reformation and the Renaissance.

4 Guttenberg Johann Guttenberg (Mainz, Germany) 1455-printed the 1 st Bible with moveable type Before books had to be copied by hand By 1500, 15 to 20 million books made on the printing press Books were cheaper and easier to print Books were more readily available Exposed Europeans to new ideas and places Increased literacy among lower classes
