Alternative Textbook Formats Accommodation Guide for using your accommodation of Alternative Textbook Formats Four simple steps to select and request specific books to be converted

Is this the first time you are using Alternative Textbook Formats at Mizzou? If yes - there is a one-time step to finish setting up the accommodation: Schedule and meet with the ACT Center for an AT Consultation The Consultation is to determine the best match of digital format for you The ACT Center will convert your books to the format that you decide on together To schedule your consultation with the ACT Center, contact: Jennifer Thornhill Phone: (573) 884-8600 Email: ThornhillJ@missouri.edu

Steps to request books in Alternative “Alt” format Step 1 – sign agreement When the system prompts you - Sign the “Agreement for Receiving Alternative Textbook Formats” electronically in myAccess Click on the form and read the contents. Then type your name where it asks to confirm your agreement and click on “Submit Form”

Step 2 – go to the “Alternative Formats” page On the left hand menu bar under “My Accommodations” Click on: “Alternative Formats”

Step 3 – select books On the ALTERNATIVE FORMATS page, you will see a Request section with a list of textbooks and items for your courses. To request each specific book that you would like to have converted: click on “Select” Note: If the list of books is not showing up, check the Q & A at end of this tutorial.

Step 3 (cont.) - books in process After you select books, they will show up in a new list as “BEING PROCESSED” You can track the status of your book conversions under the “Status” column Only one more step to go !

Step 4 – provide receipts Students must provide proof of purchase before books can be made available. To check on whether we’ve received your receipts, view the receipt “RCPT” column. You can provide receipts to the Disability Center in 2 ways: Email them to our books address – DisabilityCenterBooks@missouri.edu Stop by the office and drop off a paper copy

Requesting books in Alt Format Questions & Answers Q: What if I haven’t bought my books yet? Can I request my books in Alt Format before I have receipts? A: Yes! You can submit Alt Format requests as soon as you enroll in classes. In fact, we recommend it so books can be prepared for you as soon as possible. When you submit requests, we start the process of locating and converting the books. We can’t give you access to them until you provide receipts of course, but we can get them ready in advance.

Requesting books in Alt format Questions & Answers Q: How long does it take to convert the books? A: For digital books, it takes between 2-4 weeks. For Braille and other tactile formats, it can take up to 6 weeks to get the first chapter transcribed, embossed and delivered.

Requesting books in Alt format Questions & Answers Q: I am new and have not yet met with the ACT Center for my Consultation. Can I put in my book requests now before I meet with the ACT Center? A: Yes, you can put in requests before the ACT meeting. We would actually recommend that in order to shorten your waiting time.

Requesting books in Alt format Questions & Answers Q: What if my professor assigns a book that is not on the bookstore list? A: You can manually enter a book yourself. Go to the Alternative Formats page (slide 4) and scroll down the page to: ADDITIONAL BOOK OR READING MATERIALS. Select class, enter the book title and as many details as you know (e.g. author, edition #). That will help us to locate the correct book. Be sure to click “Submit Request” when complete.

Requesting books in Alt Format Questions & Answers Q: What if only some (or none) of my courses are showing up on the book list on the ALTERNATIVE FORMATS page? A: Check to see if you checked the box to select “Alternative textbook format” when you selected accommodations in each of your courses. Note: If you need more details on where and how to select accommodations for your courses, please review the tutorial called “ myAccess Accommodation Renewal” located on our website.

Requesting books in Alt Format Questions & Answers Q: What if I have other questions about requesting Alternative Textbook formats? A: We will be happy to answer them! Email us at mudcbooks@missouri.edu This email account is for all books-related questions and is monitored daily by our staff. We’re here to help.
