Learning Styles How You Learn Best

Learning Styles Not everyone learns the same way Quizzes measure your learning style preference not your ability to learn Learning style preferences may be strong or weak You may identify with each style in some way

Characteristics of Visual Learners Neat & orderly Speak quickly Remember what was seen, rather than heard Have trouble remembering verbal instructions unless they are written down Would rather read than be read to Often know what to say but can’t think of the right words Sometimes tune out when they mean to pay attention

Task # 1 Draw a cartoon of a visual learner

Characteristics of Auditory Learners Talk to themselves when working Easily distracted by noise Enjoy reading aloud & listening Find writing difficult but are better at telling Like music more than art Learn by listening & remember what was discussed rather than seen Can spell better out loud than in writing

Task # 2 Think, pair, share your response to the following question: Why might it help an auditory learner to participate in a class debate?

Characteristics of Kinesthetic Learners Speak slowly Move a lot Learn by manipulating & doing Memorize by walking & seeing Use a finger as a pointer when reading Can’t sit still for long periods of time Want to act things out Gesture a lot

Task 3 Crabwalk around the room while thinking about what this cartoon might mean…

Tips For Each Learning Style Visual Auditory Kinesthetic Take notes Participate in class discussions Take frequent study breaks Highlight important parts of text Read text aloud Pace or walk as you study Use study cards Create musical jingles to help memorize Chew gum when studying Use charts & graphs Discuss your ideas verbally Physically “do it” Watch videos Dictate to someone while they write down your thoughts Use bright colours to highlight reading material Use maps Make speeches & presentations Practice by repeating Draw & use drawings Repeat things aloud Have a clear view of teachers Sound out words Stretch in chair Use mind-maps Use a tape recorder during lectures Listen to music while you study
