Pablo Picasso 1901 -1904 Blue Period. A period of sadness for Picasso. 1907 – Meets Braque 1909-1912 - Cubism Period

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973): Country- Spain Media- Drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, mosaics, stage design and graphic arts Major Style and Contribution to Art With Braque he developed Cubism, collage and “found art” Invented new forms of art for almost ¾ of the 20th century Influences- Early work influenced by Post Impressionists. However, Cezanne and African sculpture inspired his cubist works. Interesting Fact- Picasso created more than 20,000 works of art in his lifetime. In 1913, at The Armory Show in NY he introduced the new style of cubism and caused a sensation Picasso's "Girl with a Mandolin"

Collage: While artists have been layering images and Incorporating elements into their work since the advent of paper, collage truly emerged as a medium in its own right in the early years of the 20th century with the Cubist experiments of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque.

Collage : A piece of art made by attaching various materials such as photographs, pieces of paper, or fabric onto a backing.

Texture The way something looks or feels. It can implied, a photo or drawing, or actual texture, actual fur or leather. Examples: smooth, bumpy, shiny, rough, furry, etc.

For this project copy the outline and any other details you’d like to have of your self-portrait drawing onto another sheet of 8 X 10 drawing paper. Fill the space within the outline with the materials you collected. Think outside the box: concert tickets, birthday cards, movie stubs, dried flowers, artwork, etc. Use tracing paper to cut the items to the right size. Fill the entire space. None of the drawing paper should be showing when you finish.

What can you do with the background? Pages of a book? Song lyrics? Maps? Dictionary page? Make sure your background and foreground are different items. Use rubber cement to glue down the papers and objects. Be Creative!
