2 COLLAGE- PART 1 In this collage lesson, students will learn the following: -How to create a collage on a 10”x10” paper -About the history of collage- a brief overview. -What makes an interesting collage composition -About a couple of modern art collage artists, Picasso and Braque.

3 What is COLLAGE? Collage is an artistic composition of materials and objects pasted over a surface, often with unifying lines and color. It is an assemblage of diverse elements.

Where did the actual word come from? Did you know…. Collage comes from the French word “coller”. Coller means “to glue”.

5 What does Collage include?
Name some types of materials that collage artists use?

6 A collage may sometimes include:
Newspaper & magazine clippings, ribbons, bits of colored paper, handmade paper, portions of other artwork or texts, photographs, and other found objects glued to a piece of paper or canvas.

7 When did COLLAGE begin? The origins of collage can be traced back hundreds of years, but this technique made a dramatic reappearance in the early 20th century as an art form of novelty.

8 Techniques of Collage were first used at the time of the invention of paper in China, around 200 BC!

9 The use of collage, however,
wasn’t used by many people until the 10th century in Japan when calligraphers began to apply glued paper, using texts on surfaces, when writing their poems.

11 Techniques of collage appeared in Europe during the 13th century
Techniques of collage appeared in Europe during the 13th century. (Medieval Time period.) Gold leaf panels started to be applied to various surfaces. Below you can see gold leaf with calligraphy.

Collage, in the modern art world sense, began with Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Pablo Picasso was the first to use collage in oil paintings!!! Below is the example where Picasso pasted a patch of oilcloth with a chair cane design onto the canvas of the piece made in the early 1900’s. We will discuss more of Picasso when we begin Part 2!

In this lesson, students will learn the following: -How to create a 2”x2” viewfinder window -How to use a grid to draw an enlarged section of their collage -The names of a few influential collage and painting artists! (Picasso, Braque, & Bearden)
