Windows file management Unit 6 5 days including projects, review, and test.

Objectives Describe how Windows stores files Identify parts of the File Explorer window Use File Explorer to navigate folders on your computer Copy, move, delete and rename files Create and use shortcuts Search for files Identify file types

File System Hierarchy Highest level is the root directory. Files are contained in folders. C:\ is the path

File and Folder Permissions Determine whether you can access a file or not Read, write, modify, etc. Admin can access files on all accounts Standard users can only access their own Set permissions Right-click on file Security tab Select user & click edit

The Window Minimize, Restore Down/Maximize, Close Window working in is ACTIVE WINDOW

Navigating to Your Files The file path indicates where a file is stored on your computer by leading you through the folder and file organization to your file Removable Disk (E:)—The drive name Module 1—A top-level folder on drive E Lesson 3—A subfolder in the Module 1 folder Basics.docx—The full filename of the file

File Types System Files Application Files Data Files In Windows or Program File folders .dll, .sys Application Files Part of a program, like Word, for running it .exe, .bat Data Files Ones you create in a program Word docs, Spreadsheets, etc.

Changing the View Open up flash drive and change the view to see the difference. There’s also check boxes for check boxes next to files to select them, to show file extensions, and to show hidden files.

Activity 1 Open Word and type “This is a test” Put in your flash drive Save the document to the Desktop as Example Put in your flash drive Open your flash drive Window plus view of desktop where file is Make a folder called Copy Test Change view to Medium Icons Copy file on desktop & paste it in the folder

Activity 2 In flash drive folder, rename the Example file single clicking it and hit F2 Rename it My Stuff Then right-click and rename it Things Click and drag the Things file to the desktop Moves the file to the desktop Then drag the file to the Recycle Bin Right-click on Bin and Empty Recycle Bin
