Connotation (n): ideas or meanings suggested by a word; associations that go beyond a word’s literal meaning 4. Denotation (n): the direct, specific meaning of a word 5. Idiom (n): an expression with a special meaning that cannot be understood from the meanings of individual words; a nonliteral expression
