Warm Up: China’s Geography Why did China’s geography cause the ancient Chinese to have little knowledge of other civilizations, such as those of Egypt, Greece, India, and Rome? Take the information we discussed yesterday to help you answer this question. Or pages 137-138 in your textbook.

Geography For thousands of years, the Chinese believed they were the only people who existed on Earth. China has geographic barriers such as mountains and seas that separated China from the rest of the world, and made them believe they lived at the center.

The Himalaya Mountains Geography Mountains Himalaya Mountains – natural barrier in the south The Himalaya Mountains

Dust Storm in Taklimakan Desert Geography Deserts Gobi Desert One of the driest deserts in the world Taklimakan Desert Nicknamed the “Sea of Death” because of poisonous snakes, sand storms, hot days, freezing nights, and intense shortage of water Dust Storm in Taklimakan Desert

Geography Seas/Oceans – East China Sea, South China Sea, Yellow Sea, Pacific Ocean Provided trade routes Access to food

Geography Rivers – Huang River (Yellow River) and Chang (Yangtze) River Provided fertile soil Access to safe drinking water Huang is known as "The Great Sorrow".  Each year during the flood season, all homes along the Huang River were destroyed. Over time, people learned the techniques of flood control – dikes – protective wall that holds back floods
