Warm Up: China’s Geography Why did China’s geography cause the ancient Chinese to have little knowledge of other civilizations, such as those of Egypt, Greece, India, and Rome? Take the information we discussed yesterday to help you answer this question. Or pages 137-138 in your textbook.

Geography For thousands of years, the Chinese believed they were the only people who existed on Earth. China has geographic barriers such as mountains and seas that separated China from the rest of the world, and made them believe they lived at the center.

Zhou Dynasty 1122 B.C. – 260 B.C.

Zhou Dynasty About 1122 B.C. the Zhou conquered the Shang Dynasty. Near the end of the Zhou Dynasty was the period known as the Warring States. Small kingdoms fought for control over one another until the Qin Dynasty took over.

Mandate of Heaven “Heaven” places a mandate (a law or an order) on a family to rule. Chinese believed that rulers came to power because it was their destiny. It also gave a father authority over his family.

Importance of Family In Ancient China, a typical household would include an extended family. The oldest male was the head of the family – made all the important decisions. Children honored their parents. Women were to be respectful to the males of the family.

Family Names Chinese established the practice of using family names along with a personal name. The family name was passed down from father to child. In Chinese society, the family name comes first.
