CHINESE GEOGRAPHY By Anna Stemplewicz

INTRO  I am going to tell you about the amazing places you can see in China. After this, you are going to learn more about Chinese geography like rivers, deserts and mountains.

RIVERS The Huang He River, also known as the Yellow River, is about 3,000 miles long. The water banks are low so each year it floods. The Chinese people call this river “The Great Sorrow’’ because each year during flooding season all homes along the Huang He River are destroyed. The Yangtze River, also known as the Long River, is the third longest river in the world. It is about 4,000 miles long. The Yangtze River has high banks, which keeps homes safe from the annual flooding.

HIMALAYAN MOUNTAINS The most impressive barriers are the Himalayan Mountains. The Himalayas include ten of the highest peaks in the world! The Himalayas are mountains that stretch across a distance of 2500 km from west to east, in a curve. The formation of Himalayas dates back to 70 million years ago. One of the most well-know mountain peaks of the Himalayan Mountains is Mount Everest. Mount Everest is the earth’s most highest mountain. Many people like to try to climb Mount Everest even though it presents dangers such as altitude sickness, weather and wind.

DESERTS The Gobi Desert is one of the driest deserts in the world. It gets very cold in winter, and snow does fall. The Taklamakan Desert, China’s other desert, is nicknamed the “Sea of Death”. It has poisonous snakes, frequent sand storms, boiling days, freezing nights and intense water shortages. The “Sea of Death” is not a small desert, it’s the second largest desert in the world.

CONCLUSION  As you can see, China has a very diverse landscape ranging from low rivers to cold dry deserts to some of the world’s largest mountains.
