The APA Citation Style: Introduction for the AP Psychology Brain Project

Citation Styles APA = American Psychological Association Used primarily in the natural and social sciences, like psychology. MLA = Modern Language Association Used primarily in the humanities; you’ve probably used this in your English or history classes.

APA Citation Style: The Bibliography In the APA citation style, the title of the bibliography page is References. Keep track of the information you need for your References page as you do your research. What information do you need?

Information needed from a book source for the citation on your References page: Author, A. A. (Year of publication). Title of work: Capital letter also for subtitle. Location: Publisher. Example: Brinkley, T. R. (2012). Addiction to texting: A study of cell phone dependency. New York, NY: Random House Publishing.

Information needed from an online source for the citation on your References page: Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (Date of publication). Title of article. Title of Journal, volume number, page range. Retrieved from http://www.someaddress.com/full/url/ Example: Dodson, M., & Jones, D. L. (2015). The emotional brain. Journal of Neuroscience, 8, 120-125. Retrieved from http://www.articlehomepage.com/full/url.

Format of APA References Page The title of the page is References. All sources are listed in alphabetical order by the author’s last name (use title if the author is unknown). Use a hanging indent: 1st line of each entry is flush left & succeeding lines are indented 5 spaces. Use double spacing throughout. (The next slide is a sample References page.)
