Kitchen Styles Six basic styles: Straight-line kitchen L-shaped kitchen Corridor kitchen Island kitchen U-shaped kitchen Peninsula kitchen

Straight-Line Kitchen All work centers are located on a single wall

L-Shaped Kitchen Work centers located on two adjacent walls

Corridor Kitchen Work centers located on two walls opposite each other

U-Shaped Kitchen Work centers located on three adjoining walls, in a U shape

Peninsula Kitchen Base cabinets and counter areas extend into room from one of the walls Can divide kitchen area from dining or family room

Island Kitchen Modification of straight-line, L-shaped, or U-shaped kitchen that includes a freestanding island

Green Architecture Green kitchens Kitchens are active recycling areas Familiarize yourself with recycling rules in communities where you design homes Design kitchen to make recycling easy Work with clients to determine their needs

Cabinets Provide the majority of storage space Standard base cabinets are 34-1/2" high and 24" deep and are available in 3" increments Wall cabinets are 12" to 13" inches deep and 12" to 30" high

Cabinet Accessibility Use compartmentalized drawers and roll-out shelves, racks, and baskets Position wall cabinets so first shelf is reachable from seated position Mechanical assistance needed for cabinets over stoves or refrigerators Use adjustable shelves in wall cabinets
