IB Information Night Session Outcomes To gain a better understanding of the IB Diploma Program. To learn more about the IB philosophy and how it is a embedded throughout DFHS. To understand what IB Courses are offered and how they are supported for all students. To understand the “logistics” of the program in preparation for grade 11.

Why an IB Education? Supports the vision and mission of the district. Supports the development of 21st century skills. Prepares students for college, the workforce, and beyond. Prepares students for an ever-changing global market.

The “Big Ideas” of the IB Diploma Program Directly aligned to the IB Middle Years Program (MYP) 2-Year Program beginning in grade 11. All students take both IB English and IB Math through participation in courses appropriate to student levels and readiness. Co-taught classes support students as needed. Students may take additional IB courses or pursue the full IB Diploma. IB courses fall within 6 academic “Groups.” Standard Level (SL) & Higher Level (HL)

The IB Middle Years Program (MYP) All students at DFHS are IB students. DFHS was authorized as an MYP school in 2016. The MYP Learning Standards are directly aligned to the IB DP Learning Standards. All students complete an MYP Personal Project in grade 10.

IB Diploma Program Overview Group 1: English HL, English SL Group 2: Spanish/French/Italian SL, Spanish Ab Initio Group 3: History of the Americas and 20th Century Topics HL Group 4: Biology SL, Chemistry SL, Physics SL Group 5: Math Studies SL, Math SL, Math HL Group 6: Film HL, Art HL, Music SL or HL

Connecting the MYP with the DP “Big Ideas” Provides students with: Scope (“A holistic view”) Depth Academic skills Leadership Confidence A Global Perspective “The tools” for success in college and beyond: Critical thinking “Don’t accept facts” “Interpreter rather than a recipient” Service opportunities Research skills Self-direction

Experience the Diploma Program Varied Assessments (“Multiple Measures”) In addition to an IB exam at the end of the course, students demonstrate understanding through: Authentic Research Projects & Portfolios Written Assessments Oral Commentaries Internal/External Assessments English SL/HL (Example): Literature Essay (External—Junior Year) Oral Presentations and Commentary

Experience the Diploma Program Varied Assessments (Example of “Multiple Measures”) English SL or HL IB Written Assignment: 1200-1500 words (External—Junior Year) Oral Presentations and Commentaries (Internally assessed & externally moderated—Junior and Senior Years) Final Papers: Comparative Essay & Commentary on an excerpt or a poem

Student Participation IB Program at DFHS (2017-18) Student Participation Continued increase in overall student participation and enrollment in TOK. All students enrolled in at least two IB courses and most enroll in at least three. In 2017, we had 432 subject entries!

The IB DP & Science Research Erica Curran, Science Research Coordinator Science Research is a 3-year program (grades 10-12) Complements the IB DP by focusing on: Problem solving and Inquiry Critical thinking and Analysis Initiative and Self Direction Communication Curriculum planned in tandem with the IB DP requirements Extended Essay

IB Diploma Program: “Nuts and Bolts” Preparing for Grade 11

IB Diploma Program: “Nuts and Bolts” Students can pursue full Diploma OR take individual IB DP courses. All students take IB English and IB Math. Choosing Classes: Consider strengths, interests, and goals Teacher Recommendations Consult with guidance counselor Open Enrollment We offer Standard level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) IB courses (parallel scheduling) (p. 10)

IB Diploma Program Overview To receive the full IB Diploma, students must: Refer to pages 7-8 of the IB Handbook Take one course from each group 3-4 HL courses 2-3 SL courses Earn a minimum of 24-28 total points on exams Complete Extended Essay, TOK, and CAS requirements

Include: IB Chemistry SL Chemistry (Regents or NR) Physics (Regents or NR) Nature of Science Lab Science for seniors DFHS will pilot course for two years before moving to an IB SL course “Real world” flexible science curriculum that is accessible to all students

Current 9thth graders in Living Environment Science Progression Current 9thth graders in Living Environment Physics in grade 10: Non-Regents, Regents, or Honors Flexibility in grades 11 & 12. Include: IB Chemistry SL Chemistry (Regents or NR) IB Chemistry (grade 12) or IB Biology (grade 12) Nature of Science Lab Science for seniors DFHS will pilot course for two years before moving to an IB SL course “Real world” flexible science curriculum that is accessible to all students
