What does professionalism mean to you?

Why Talk About Professionalism The level of professionalism you have will directly impact your career. Helping you understand what employers will expect from you will help you succeed.

Professionalism: Looking a Little Deeper Someone who is an expert or has great skill in a particular area. Reflects someone who has a vested interest in their field. Someone who takes responsibility for doing a good job. Someone who acts in a way that brings honor to others in their field.

Professionals take pride in who they are, how they interact with colleagues and how they represent their organization and field.

Employers Want People Who Are: Personable Mature Positive and enthusiastic Willing to learn Honest Have a good attitude Are punctual and have good attendance Respectful of others and have good manners Take other’s needs into account Show initiative Have a neat and clean appearance

What is your idea of professional dress in the workplace?

Do your research… Investigate the work environment Know the company dress code Make sure your clothing is season appropriate Example: conservative work environment = business attire may be appropriate (suit) Skate/surf company = dressy casual (khakis, dress shoes, polo)

Appropriate Appearance Clothing Must be clean and neat Reflect your personal style with tasteful accessories Wear clothing that covers your body appropriately. No shirts that show midriffs, shirts that are low cut or inappropriate undergarments. Appearance Cover tattoos Natural hair color Piercings should be limited to two earrings per ear Grooming Clean No perfume or cologne Washed and styled hair Appropriately cut finger nails Light or neutral make-up Trimmed facial hair

You are going on an interview for a Production Artist position with Reef and you already know the company is super casual. What should you wear on your interview? Wear Reef sandals and boards shorts to impress them with your loyalty to the company Call the interviewer to as what the dress code is like and follow the exact look Wear something professional because it is always better to go the conservative route Wear whatever you would like; if they don’t like your outfit then you don’t want to work there anyway None of the above

DON’T … wear ultra short skirts

DON’T … show too much skin

DON’T … wear jeans or casual gear

DON’T … over-accessorize or deliberately show your tattoo

DON’T … show too much facial hair or deliberately wear overalls

DO … wear a suit with a tailored shirt

Do this!

DO … wear a suit & tie (if appropriate)

Do this!

Leave it in but try not to talk too much during the presentation Monica has a tongue ring and is wondering if she should take it out before her graphic design interview. What should she do: Leave it in but try not to talk too much during the presentation This is an interview for a graphic design job so it doesn’t matter because artist wear body jewelry and are allowed to express themselves Take it out and leave it out during the interview (so what if it closes up… this is an opportunity of a lifetime) None of the above
