Did France’s system of estates violate the principle of equality? 2. What do you think King Louis XVI should do to raise money for France?

Causes of the French Revolution (STEAK + Famine) Description Social Inequality The Third Estate (97% population) was made up of the bourgeoisie, city workers, and peasants. Taxes The First Estate (clergy) and the Second Estate (nobles) paid little taxes. The middle class citizens and poor peasants of the 3rd Estate paid all of the taxes in France.

Enlightenment The Enlightenment principles of freedom and equality encouraged members of the 3rd Estate to challenge the absolute rule of King Louis XVI. American Revolution The French were inspired by the American colonies successful fight for liberty and equality in the American Revolution. The French modeled their Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen on the US Declaration of Independence.

King Louis XVI Absolute ruler King Louis XVI denied most of the people in France of their natural rights. Famine In 1789, a terrible famine occurred in France. Starving peasants could no longer afford bread and they began attacking nobles.
