Chandler School Kindergarten Information – Full Day or Half Day? Duxbury Public Schools

Welcome to Chandler School 9:10 – 3:20 – Full Day Kindergarten 9:10 – 11:45 – Half Day Kindergarten Welcome Back Day – is August 30. You will bring your child in for about an hour – you and your child will find your classroom, meet your teacher, and get to know the classroom, by doing some activities in the classroom. The next day will be the first day for Chandler students. They will have their regular transportation. Kindergarten studnets will be let off the buses first and will be led to the playground to meet their teacher on the first week. Gradually release that as they learn the way to their classrooms.

Chandler Kindergarten 2017 - 2018 This year, we have: 8 full day sessions – 6 hours and 30 minutes Curriculum: Literacy, Math, Science, Social Studies, Art, Music, Physical Education, and Library 1 half day session– 2 hours and 30 minutes Curriculum: Literacy, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Library This year – numbers look the same for this year. We have 161 total registered – 9 half day

Sample Daily Schedules Sample Daily Kindergarten Schedules ½ Day Kindergarten Full Day Kindergarten Subject/Activity Time (in min.) Arrival 10 Calendar Literacy 40 Center Activities & Snack 60 Math 20 Pack-up & Recess Subject/Activity Time (in min.) Arrival 10 Calendar Literacy 120 Science/Social Studies/Technology 40 Lunch 25 Recess Quiet Story Time Special Area (Art, P.E., Music, Library) Math 90 Snack and Developmental Play Centers 30 Pack-up Sample Day – you will see that literacy in the full day is 120 minutes – that does not mean 120 minutes of sitting and reading Whole group instruction – shared story, centers, small group instruction, parent volunteers, and independent practice, partner work - HALF Day is a similar structure, in a less amount of time Math is run in a similar way – whole group, small group and centers

Lunch and Recess Half day students have recess with their class. Half day students eat lunch at home. Full day students have recess with other full day kindergarten students. Full Day students have lunch in the Chandler Cafeteria. Lunch, Recess, and the Bus ride are important parts of the day for Kindergarten students. These are the more unstructured times during the day, but we work hard to structure them as much as possible. Recess is first, and then lunch with all K classes eating at the same time. At lunch they sit at their class’s assigned tables. If you are buying lunch, children are assigned a code and they go through the line and punch in their code. If they bring, they go right to their seats. The bus ride – Kindergarten students sit in the front. If you have not already registered for the bus, please visit the Duxbury Public Schools website, where you can fill out the bus registration form.

Kindergarten Curriculum Information The curriculum expectations for full day and half day are the same. The full day program gives students more time with specific concepts, as well as time to practice. Regardless of which program you choose, your kindergarten student will be taught the same content. For specific curriculum information by subject, please go to our Chandler Curriculum Page.

Technology at Chandler School All kindergarten students have access to iPads and the computer lab.

Special Subject Areas Music, Art, PE, Library, & Spanish Full Day students visit Music, Art, Spanish, and Library once a week for 40 minutes. Full Day students visit Physical Education twice a week for 40 minutes each time. Half day students visit library once a week for 40 minutes. FDK students will have art, music, library, Spanish and PE twice a week. Our special areas classes are some of the most fun times during the day and these are our teachers.

WELCOME TO CHANDLER SCHOOL! We understand that whether to send your child to full day or half day can be a difficult decision for some families. If you have any questions, please call or email Erin Wiesehahn @ 781-934-7680 or ewiesehahn@duxbury.k12.ma.us WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO WELCOMING YOUR CHILD AND YOUR FAMILY TO THE CHANDLER SCHOOL COMMUNITY.
