4 What Does DLI Look Like? Program Attributes Program Research
50% of core academic instruction occurs in the target language (Spanish) Academic content is not translated in the English classroom; the Spanish classroom is not the same content as the English classroom translated. Rather it is new, related content. Language learning and content learning are integrated. Students learn new content while learning a new language. The Spanish classroom is a 100% immersion environment; no English is spoken except by students as they learn the target language it will take 1-3 years for students to acquire conversational language it will take 5-7 years for academic language development it takes a least 600 hours to acquire some language proficiency (this equates to the end of 1st/beginning of 2nd grade for us)
