Decision Making Strategies and Choosing a High School Kaisa Lee, School Counselor November 6th Jessica’s classes November 9th Russ’s classes

Student Learning Targets I understand decision making strategies. I can apply decision making strategies within the high school choice process.

How do you make tough decisions? Class debate. Split room into 4 options: ask your friends, think by yourself, ask your family, ask your teachers/counselors/another adult. Have students discuss why they consult with the people they do.

Decision Making Model 2 3 Family and Community Impact 1 Family and Community Input Family and Community Impact 6 4 5

There are several strategies out there!

High School Open Houses!

HS Attendance Areas and Pathways High school options are determined by home address. The current eighth grade site does not determine the high school a student will attend. The only pathways for high school are Roosevelt Spanish Immersion and South Open. This applies to students who attend Anwatin, Marcy and Barton. Seward is not a pathway to South for example.

Attendance Areas and Map 1A and 1H – Henry 1B, 1C and 1D – North 1E, 1F, 1G – Edison 2A, 2B, 2C and 2E – South 2D and 2F – Roosevelt 1D, 3A, 3B, 3E and 3G – Southwest 3C, 3D, 3F and 3H - Washburn Use the High School Request Center to help you determine your options based on where you live. Request Center portal goes “live” late November/early December 2018.

Expanded School Options In an effort to provide an integrated learning environment, families who live in elementary school attendance areas 1B,1C and 1H in north Minneapolis (north of Olson Memorial Highway, south of Dowling and west of the Mississippi River), and who qualify for free/reduced priced lunch may request to attend Southwest High School and receive transportation (see map). Please Note: This option is available until the school request deadline: February 3, 2019.

Citywide Schools and Programs FAIR Downtown: The Fine Arts Interdisciplinary Resource (FAIR) School Downtown provides students in grades 1-3, 9-12 the opportunity to engage in a rigorous core academic program with a focus on the arts and “green sciences.” North: Academy of Arts and Communications – ISA Framework ISA's model is framed by seven research-based principles that lead to improved student achievement and significantly increased high school graduation and college-going rates: http://www.studentachievement.org STEM Academy (starting at 9th grade) Roosevelt: Spanish Immersion Pathway South: All Nations Open Note: Students who attend Anwatin Spanish Immersion, Barton Open or Marcy Open must proactively choose the appropriate pathway if they wish to continue in that curriculum.
