Electoral College Why– Originally a safeguard against stupid voters. Election for president is not a direct vote. Each state has a certain number of electoral votes equal to their representation in Congress. When a voter votes for a President the vote goes toward the electoral college slate in his or her state. The majority wins all the electoral votes in that state The president must win by a majority of electoral votes 270 out of 538
