What are the differences??? Elementary school 1-3 CORE teacher PE once a week - PE shoes required Music once a week Support classes 2 recesses + lunch recess Limited homework Junior High 4 CORE teachers – English, Math, Social Studies, Science PE daily – required to dress down in PE uniform Elective - daily Support classes daily Lunch break Nightly homework or studying (should be 1 hour minimum / may be in multiple classes)

Changes to embrace Elementary School Junior High Grades – standards based One - three teachers to track student work (all subjects) One teacher for parent contact Attendance notes / questions – typically given to teacher Class parties to celebrate Junior High Grades – letter grades based on points and percentages (A-F) Each CORE teacher has 80-100 students to track work Multiple teachers to contact (principal and/or counselor can coordinate) Attendance notes / questions – school secretary School dances to celebrate academic & behavioral success

How to help your child transition to the workload of junior high Your child may need help with Organizing a study/homework place – minimum of 1 hour night Organizing his/her binder Keeping school supplies in one place (a plastic tote, on a shelf, in a drawer, in a basket, etc.) Checking grades on the student information system – recommended to do every Thursday Writing down assignments in his/her agenda Turning work in Keeping work until he/she verifies the teacher entered the grade correctly in the electronic grade book Organizing book bag / backpack / other items the night before

Shifts in developmental needs Physical changes – hormones, hygiene and maturation Psychological changes – new patterns of thinking Emotional changes – mood swings Peer changes – shifting of friends & making new friends Family relation changes – becoming independent Keep in mind girls tend to mature 2 years faster than boys

Building independent learner skills for JH and beyond Making time in the family schedule for studying/homework Minimizing absences Allow your child to make mistakes Support without rescuing Trust and verify Please ask if you need support from us during this transition.

Pathways to Promotion Students must earn a minimum of 10 credits per year to remain on track for high school graduation Credits are earned for successful completion of a class PRJH students have the potential to earn 12 credits total each year Failing a CORE class (LA, Math, Science, Social Studies) may result in a credit recovery class the following semester or summer school
