3 7th and 8th PROMOTION To be promoted:
You must have an overall average of 70 or higher in all courses. You must also have an overall average of 70 or higher in 3 of the 4 core subject areas: English and Reading Math Science Social Studies Students who do not meet these requirements must either attend summer school or repeat the 6th or 7th grade.

4 Course Selection Process
Course selection presentations were today during P.E. classes. We will visit with Tays Junior High students Friday, January 25th. Course selection sheets were sent home with students. Please look over together and select courses. Both parent and student must sign the form! Return your completed, signed course selection sheet to S. Studies teacher by Friday, February 1, 2019. Students will meet individually with counselors to go over their course selections the week of February 11, Counselors will enter selections into the computer. Verification Sheets will be sent home on Friday, March 1st. Verification forms are due Friday, March 8th to counselors.

5 Course Requests If you are moving or planning to move, please fill it out anyway. All students sign up for the following courses: 1. English/Reading Block 7th 2. English 8th 3. Math 4. Social Studies 5. Science 6. PE 7. One elective and two alternate electives (7th) 8. Two electives and three alternate electives (8th)

6 PREAP PROGRAM INFORMATION
It is recommended that students meet the following criteria for PreAP classes: 1. Have an “A” average in the academic class, or a “B” average in the PreAP class. 2. Have parent approval. 3. PreAP Social Studies is recommended for students taking PreAP English/Reading. The PreAP Course Commitment form is included on the back of the course selection sheet.

7 PREAP Program Information
PreAP courses are designed to challenge motivated students and prepare them for success in advanced coursework. These courses: typically move at a faster pace, are academically challenging, require more independent learning, and require more homework than academic courses. The PreAP Course Commitment form is included on the back of the course selection sheet.

8 PREAP Program Information
Students may exit a PreAP course during the first 6-weeks grading period or at the end of the 1st semester. The student must have teacher and parent approval to exit. Petition for PreAP/AP Course Exit form must be completed. If the student’s 6-weeks average falls below 70, it is recommended to exit the class at the end of the grading period. The PreAP Course Commitment form is included on the back of the course selection sheet.

9 GT Students Students must be screened and identified to be eligible for GT courses. If you are a 7th grade English and Reading GT student, you will sign up for the combined GT English/Reading class G710. The combined GT English/Reading class will allow you to sign up for an additional elective.

10 INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS TAKING High school credit courses
A student whose class rank* is in the top 10 percent of the graduating class may be eligible for automatic admission consideration at a Texas public college or university, with the exception of the University of Texas at Austin. Students in the graduating classes of 2019 and 2020 who rank in the Top 6% of their class are eligible for automatic admission consideration at the University of Texas at Austin. *Class rank must be based on the student’s rank at the end of the 11th grade, middle of 12th grade, or at high school graduation, whichever is most recent at the college or university’s application deadline. TOP 10% Course Catalog, pages 36-37 All semester grades and grade points earned in high school credit courses become a permanent part of the student’s high school transcript and are factored into the student’s grade point average and class rank.

11 INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS TAKING High school credit courses
Requirements to qualify for automatic admission consideration: Complete the FHSP + Endorsement, including the Distinguished Level of Achievement, Earn a satisfactory ACT or SAT score, Submit the application before the college or university’s deadline, and Provide a final high school transcript verifying completion of the FHSP + Endorsement, including the Distinguished Level of Achievement. 12 7th and 8th Grade Athletics
All rising 7th and 8th grade students will be placed in PE. Physical and coach’s approval are required for placement in athletics. Please let the coach know if you are interested in playing a sport in 7th or 8th grade. Coaches will give the counselors a list of students to be scheduled into the athletic period later this semester.

Principles of Manufacturing (J8043) **Refer to Course Catalog, page 101 for course descriptions All semester grades and grade points earned in high school credit courses become a permanent part of the student’s high school transcript and are factored into the student’s grade point average and class rank.

16 HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT COURSES
If you take a high school credit course in 8th grade, you MUST NOT request the same course in high school. You CANNOT repeat a course for which you have already earned credit. No credit is awarded for a duplicated course. Please be certain to choose the correct classes. If the student is in a high school credit course this year, the same course must not be selected for next year. Credit cannot be earned for a duplicated course. All semester grades and grade points earned in high school credit courses become a permanent part of the student’s high school transcript and are factored into the student’s grade point average and class rank.

17 Other Courses Math Lab - designed to help refine and review math skills in preparation for the STAAR test. Reading Elective - designed to help improve reading level and basic reading skills in preparation for the STAAR test. You will be recommended to take these classes if you do not pass the Math or Reading section of the 6th or 7th grade STAAR test. This class will replace an elective.

18 REMEMBER! Course selection sheets are due to S. Studies teachers by Friday, February 1, 2019. Course Catalogs are online catalog2019 Keep your course selection sheet neat and clean. Take good care of it! Choose your courses wisely – think carefully about your choices. Talk to your teachers about PreAP placement. Choose the elective that’s most interesting to you. List alternate electives. Sign and return the course sheet on time!
