What do drugs do to you? Why do people use drugs?

Define the following terms: Drugs Drug Abuse Drug misuse Medicines Over the counter Prescription drug Addiction Tolerance Withdrawal

Drugs - Substances intended for use in diagnosis, prevention and cure of disease. Medicines - Legal drugs that help the body fight injury, illness and disease. Over the Counter (OTC)- Drugs purchased without a doctors prescription. Example - Aspirin

Prescription Drugs - Must be obtained through a written doctors order. Dependence - Physical or psychological dependence on a drug, that the body required drug to perform normally. Addiction - Dependence of a substance causing an inability to continue. Tolerance - Body’s ability to resist the effect of the drug, there by necessitating larger dosage.

Drug Abuse Intentionally used improperly or unsafely. Example: Abusing painkillers Abusing over the counter medicines Use them to get a “high” instead of curing a pain or cough

Drug Misuse Improper use of medicines either prescription or over the counter. Examples: Taking more than the prescribed amount Taking at wrong times of the day Is often a mistake or a patients misunderstanding of doctors orders.

Withdrawal A person dependent on a drug, stops taking the drug and will develop withdrawal symptoms which include: Nausea or vomiting Headaches or dizziness Fever Digestion problems Tremors, seizures or death
