7th Grade Health Class Mr. Carlson

Why is health so cool?

Classroom rules and guidelines 1. Respect You need to respect yourself You need to respect your classmates You need to respect equipment You need to respect the teacher 2. Responsibility You are responsible for your actions You are responsible to come to class prepared. It’s your job to make sure you are an active student.

If these rules are difficult for you to follow, I will… 1. Politely remind you of the rules. 2. Take off 5 responsibility points for each offence. Give you a log… or two… 3. If the problem continues, I will make a phone call home. 4. The consequences continue to a more administrative level when a student reaches this stage.

Grading You will be graded on a straight percentage scale. Tests and quizzes are worth the same percentage as homework. You start with 75 participation points. How can you lose these? Talking, being disruptive, not participating, and by creating discipline problems. There will be many quizzes and tests along with different in-class and out-of-class assignments.

Hall passes You get three passes for the quarter. You can use these for the restroom, to get a drink, or to go to your locker.

Other things… What do you need for this class? Cell phones… A notebook for health class Something to write with A folder Cell phones…

How I teach…

Time to learn about each other

Our topic deals with Decision Making. Myths and Misconceptions of decision making. No one can help you make decisions; you must make them for yourself. If the outcome of a decision isn’t what I expected, then I made the wrong decision. The best decision is the one with an immediate, positive outcome.

How often do we make decisions? Turn to a partner and write down 8 decisions that you have made already today. Now, turn to a partner and write down 5 important decisions regarding your health that you think you will have to make before you turn 20.

LEADING CAUSES OF DEATH AMONG PEOPLE OF AGES 55-64

LEADING CAUSES OF DEATH AMONG PEOPLE AGES 15-24

Unintentional injuries… Were the highest death rate for 15-24 year olds. The majority of unintentional injuries are no longer considered accidents, because at least 85% of them could have been prevented. Health decisions can have a short-term or long-term consequence.

Making decisions… Some decisions take little thought, whereas others should take a lot of thought. We are going to learn a model that helps us to make big decisions in life.

Decisions in life should lead to actions that: Promote health Protect safety Protect laws Show respect for self and others Follow guidelines set by responsible adults And demonstrate good character.

Decision making model A series of steps that helps a person make a responsible decision.

Yellow Book 1st person in each row grab a book for everyone in your row. Turn to page 40.

Steps to making a decision 1. State the situation 2. List the options 3. Weigh the possible outcomes 4. Consider Values 5. Make a decision and act on it 6. Evaluate the decision

Resistance skills Skills that are used when a person wants to say no to an action and/or leave a situation. You should use these resistance skills when you are in actions that: Threaten health and safety, break laws, result in lack of respect for yourself and others, disobey guidelines, and detract from character.

Activity!
