Lesson 31: Ego and Tu, Possessive Adjectives Preview Before we begin please read page 218-219 “Grammar” of your textbook. This will give you a preview of what you are about to learn. What is a pronoun? When are subject pronouns used in Latin? Give examples of possessive adjectives in English. When do you use genitive personal pronouns vs. possessive adjectives?

Lesson 31: Ego and Tu, Possessive Adjectives Personal Pronouns vs Lesson 31: Ego and Tu, Possessive Adjectives Personal Pronouns vs. Possessive Adjectives A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun or another pronoun. The two you will be learning this week are ego (I) and tu (you). The pronouns ego and tu have no gender, but do have case and number. A possessive adjective is an adjective that shows ownership. The two you will be learning are meus/noster (mine/our) and tuus/vester (your). Possessive adjectives have case, number and gender which should obviously agree with whatever noun they’re modifying. If you want to show possession, use a possessive adjective and not a genitive personal pronoun e.g. “my friend” is meus amicus, not amicus mei. The only time you use the genitive personal pronoun is when you want to show partitive e.g. “a part of me” is “pars mei” while “my part” would be “mea pars”

Lesson 31: Ego and Tu, Possessive Adjectives Forms of ego and tu Please, please, please actually memorize these. I have 8th graders who come across nobis in a translation and have no idea what it means. I am very sick of saying, “look at page 219”. To say with me, with us, with you add –cum as a suffix to the ablative form e.g. mecum (with me) Nom. Sing. ego I tu you Genitive mei of me tui of you Dative mihi to/for me tibi to/for you Accusative me te Ablative with me with you Nom. Plural nos we vos you (all) nostrum of us vestrum of you (all) nobis to/for us vobis to/for you (all) us

Lesson 31: Ego and Tu, Possessive Adjectives Forms of meus (my), noster (our), tuus (your) and vester (your) Masculine Feminine Neuter Nominative S. noster meus vester tuus nostra mea vestra tua nostrum meum vestrum tuum Genitive nostri mei vestri tui nostrae meae vestrae tuae nostri mei vestri tui Dative nostro meo vestro tuo nostro meo vestro tuo Accusative nostrum meum vestrum tuum nostram meam vestram tuam nostrum meum Ablative nostro meo vestro tuo nostrā meā vestrā tuā Nominative Pl. nostri mei vestri tui nostra mea vestra tua nostrorum meorum vestrorum tuorum nostrarum mearum vestrarum tuarum nostrorum meorum vestrorum tuorum nostris meis vestris tuis nostris meis vestris tuis nostros meos vestros tuos nostras meas vestras tuas nostris meis vestris tuis
