1 Lesson 29: Substantives Preview
Before we begin please read page 207 “Grammar” of your textbook. This will give you a preview of what you are about to learn. What are two things you have already learned that can take the place of a noun? How would you best translate “multa portamus”?

2 Lesson 29: Substantives In Latin, an adjective can be translated as a noun Masculine adjectives will be translated as “x man/boy”: feminine adjectives will be translated as “x woman/girl: neuter adjectives will be translated as “x thing” Consider the following bonam laudatis (you praise the good woman) bonum laudatis (you praise the good man/thing) bona laudatis (you praise good things) bonus – why not “you praise the good woman”? It will be obvious when an adjective should be translated as a substantive because there will be no noun or pronoun for it to modify

3 Lesson 29: Substantives Practice
Translate the following as substantives bonarum pauca (be careful!) miseris (several possibilities)
