Matter Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. In other words, matter is anything that has mass and volume. The main three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. The particles are arranged differently in each state of matter.

What is mass? Mass is a measurement of how much matter is in the object. Units English vs. Metric Which is Larger? 1 Pound or 100 Grams 1 Kilogram or 1 Pound 1 Ounce or 1000 Milligram

What is Volume? Volume is a measure of the space occupied by a sample of matter Basic Unit is a liter (L or l) 1 Liter (l) = 1000 milliliter (ml) 1milliliter (ml) = 1cm3 (1c.c) = 1 gram Which is larger? 1 liter or 1500 milliliters 200 milliliters or 1.2 liters 12 cm3 or 1.2 milliliters

Density Density is ratio of mass of an object to its volume. Density is an intensive property that depends only on the composition of a substance, not on the sample. An intensive property is a property that depends on the type of matter in a sample, not the amount of matter.

Sample Problems Your teacher gives you a little square block metal which is exactly 1 centimeter cubed. It is small, but weighs 4.5 grams. What is its density? A piece of metal weighs 3 grams and has a density of 2.70 grams per cubic centimeter. What must be its volume?
