7 II. Mass is a measure of the amount of matter
Measuring mass compares the mass of the object to a standard unit Weight – the downward pull on an object due to gravity standard unit is kilogram (kg) base unit is gram (g) Use a (triple) beam balance to measure mass Gravity – force that pulls objects together measured by using a scale (spring scale) standard scientific unit – newton (N) common unit – pound (lb)

The moon has less gravity than Earth, so you weigh less but have the same mass.

All matter takes up space air takes up the space inside a basketball Volume of regularly shaped objects can be calculated using a formula Volume = length x width x height (V = lwh) Units of volume – centimeters cubed (cm3)

12 Volume of a liquid – how much space it takes up in a container
use graduated cylinder measure in milliliters (mL) 1 mL = 1 cm3

13 Irregularly shaped objects cannot use formula – use displacement
1. Use a graduated cylinder to measure a volume of water 2. Place object in water, note the new volume of the water 3. Subtract the original volume from the second volume, the difference is the volume of the object
