1 WARM-UP page 18L If you have two solids that look alike and you want to tell them apart…how could you do it. You are not allowed to taste it or smell it.

2 Notes….page 18R Physical properties include:
All forms of matter have chemical and physical properties. Physical properties include: Melting point Boiling point Freezing point Density

3 Density

4 Review….just read Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space (volume) Everything in the universe is made of matter Made of tiny particles called atoms Is it Matter? Yes/No A car? A box? You? Heat? Light?

5 Review Definitions Mass – amount of matter contained in a substance
Volume – amount of space an object occupies

6 Write this down….page 18R Density: A measure of how much mass is contained in a given volume. Formula…..

7 Simple Equation

8 How can we remember the formula for density?
We LOVE density (it makes a heart! …see example on board)

9 Why is density important?
Density is a physical property that can be used to identify a substance. Density tells whether an object will float in a given liquid An object will float if it is LESS dense than the liquid it is placed in

10 Density (Cont.) Density is made up of two measurements Mass Volume
Density is expressed as a combination of two units: grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm3) and grams per milliliter (g/mL). Remember 1 cm3 = 1 mL

11 Water Water’s density is 1 g/mL (or 1 g/cm3)
Are we more or less dense than water?

12 Examples (Write this on page 19R-21R..show work steps)
(1)What is the density of a wood block with a volume of 100 cm3 and a mass of 25 g? (2) What is the density of a liquid with a mass of 45 g and a volume of 48 mL?
