Presentation transcript:

Printmaking Defined-One material being pressed up against another to create a picture, pattern or design that can be repeated multiple times. History-Printmaking as we know it today, dates back to the Renaissance. The earliest type of printmaking is woodcut.

#9-The Three Materials Needed to Make ANY Print 1. A surface to create the print 2. A medium to transfer the print 3. A surface to accept the print

#8 Three Methods of Creating a Printing Surface 1. Subtractive—carve or cut away areas creating a relief surface. 2. Additive---Build up a surface in some areas to create a relief surface. 3. Found Object---Use a relief surface as it is.

How are prints different from other types of art? They are an art of multiples—many copies can be created from one printing plate. It is an indirect process---The majority of the work is done on the printing plate which no one sees. Prints are a less expensive way to own original artwork.

Vocabulary Brayer-Roller used to evenly apply the ink to the printing plate. Baron-Roller used to press the printing plate to the paper. Water soluble ink-Media used in printmaking to transfer design from the printing plate to the paper. Relief-Any surface with raised areas.

The Printing Process Printmakers always start with a PROOF. A Proof is a practice print to determine the quality of the print. An artist can go back and change or fix areas based on the proof. If the proof looks good, the artist is ready to print their EDITION. An edition is the total number of prints created from one printing plate. The printing plate is the surface used to make the print.

What makes a good Print? Clean, centered and straight on paper Interesting color/s Texture Ink isn’t too heavy or too light Don’t be afraid to experiment with your printing plate.

More about Editions An artist will create a certain number of prints for each edition. The prints are numbered according to the order they were created. The lower the number on a print the more valuable it is to collectors. The artist will mark each print in PENCIL with the print number and the edition total. Once an edition is finished. It is assumed that the artist will mar the printing plate by scratching at the surface so no more prints will be created thus making it a limited edition and possibly more valuable.

Signing and Numbering a Print Use PENCIL AJFischer 3/25 The 3 indicates this was the third print created out of a total of 25

Your Edition Each student will print 10 prints for their edition.

Reduction Printing We will be using this method for our prints The process seems confusing at first but it will make sense as we go First determine your design (Tessellation: animal and geometric pattern) Print your image 4X6~ Color it with colored pencils using two of these colors and white Black Yellow Teal (blue-green) Gold Brown Fuchsia (bright pink)

Transfer your design Use charcoal to transfer your design to the printing plate Gouge out the areas that you want WHITE Use the ink and brayer to print your lightest color (gold) Print 10 times Wash the printing plate and gouge out the areas that you want to stay the color you just printed (gold) Next, ink and print your final color over the top of your original 10 prints. Sign and number!
