3  Relief print - a print made from a raised surface such as wood or linoleum. Unwanted areas are removed from the surface and these cut areas will be white on the print. The surface that is left will print the color of the ink.

4  Reduction block print- a relief print made by alternating, cutting, and printing the same linoleum or woodblock, usually working from light to dark colors.

5  Craftsmanship- skill and dexterity in handling the techniques of a medium. Fine art requires a balance of creativity and craftsmanship.  Consistency between prints- means that each print is essentially the same

6  Brayer- a roller used to apply ink to the surface of wood or linoleum before printing.  Inking Plate- a surface to roll ink upon. Generally, a glass surface is used.  Gouges- scoop-shaped tools used to remove wood or linoleum when making relief prints.

7  Burnishing- technique used by printmakers to apply pressure to the back of the print paper in order to cause the ink to adhere to the paper rather than the relief block.  Press- Instrument that is used to apply large amount of pressure equally

8  Registration marks- marks made on the paper surface to help insure that the print image is in the exact same position every time it is printed.

9  Pull- to print an image  Mirror image- the reverse picture that occurs when prints are made from wood or linoleum.

10  Artist’s proof - a print pulled to show progress and is for the artist’s own use. The artist’s proof is excluded from the numbering of an edition.

11  Edition- the total number of duplicate prints pulled and authenticated by the artist for distribution. (e.g., The eleventh print in an edition of fifty is numbered 11/50.)
