Element #1 Symbolism- using an object to stand for an idea Examples of symbols: peace- United States- Democrats- Republicans- money

Element #2 Captioning and labeling- used for clarity and emphasis

Element #3 Analogy- a comparison between two unlike things that share some characteristics

Element #4 Irony- the difference between the way things are and the way things should be or the way things are expected to be

Element #5 Exaggeration- overstating or magnifying a problem, physical feature, or habit. Examples include bushy eyebrows, large ears, baldness

What’s the point? Political cartoons are intended to persuade or convince you of something Political cartoons expose problems to the general public using pictures in place of words It takes complex issues and makes it easier for people to understand
