2 Political Cartoon Definition
“ Political cartoons appear in newspapers and magazines and use pictures, symbols, and words to comment on current events, topics, and politics. These cartoons are often funny, but not always. Their main purpose is to present an opinion or make a comment about the politics or events of the time.”  Sandra Boyd Tar Heel Junior Historian, 2001, © N Carolina Museum of History.

3 Bias Definition A preference or an inclination, especially one that inhibits impartial judgment Synonyms Prejudice Favoritism Predisposition Preconception Preference Preconceived notion Forgone conclusion

4 Cartoonists’ Persuasive Techniques
Symbolism Cartoonists use simple objects, or symbols, to stand for larger concepts or ideas. Exaggeration Sometimes cartoonists overdo, or exaggerate, the physical characteristics of people or things in order to make a point. Labeling Cartoonists often label objects or people to make it clear exactly what they stand for. Analogy An analogy is a comparison between two unlike things. By comparing a complex issue or situation with a more familiar one, cartoonists can help their readers see it in a different light. Irony Irony is the difference between the ways things are and the way things should be, or the way things are expected to be. Cartoonists often use irony to express their opinion on an issue. From Library of Congress---Cartoon Analysis Guide

5 Instructions Look at the political cartoons twice.
Jot down notes about images that you like. Select two cartoons that you think will have two different points of view. Complete a political cartoon worksheet for each selected cartoon. Use the resource page to identify the provenance (who created the original, when and where was it made). Write a persuasive argument about the point of view of the creator. Was the cartoon told from the American colonist or the British side?
