Erasing Structure to Find Form

The Process Observation and Procedure: Create a free form rectangular shape covering most of the paper surface apply and swipe tone into the paper look at and draw lightly the contours of the complete form first determine the lightest and darkest areas of the form begin by erasing the lightest lights next, using the side of the stick, apply more conte in the darkest areas once the lights and darks are in, begin drawing detail allow beautiful, varied line to remain in some areas when managing detail, jump back and forth from each area of the form (this enables you to continue to compare relationships)

The Classroom Still Life: organic forms ~ bones ~

Student Projects

Tips to Remember: Technical remain as perpendicular to your drawing surface as possible keep all your necessary tools out near you (we tend to forget those items left in the toolbox) keep your conte pencils sharpened have a variety of lengths of conte sticks available to applying areas of massive tone

Tips: Observation and Procedure apply and swipe tone into the paper look at and draw lightly the contours of the complete form first determine the lightest and darkest areas of the form begin by erasing the lightest lights next, using the side of the stick, apply more conte in the darkest areas once the lights and darks are in, begin drawing detail allow beautiful, varied line to remain in some areas when managing detail, jump back and forth from each area of the form (this enables you to continue to compare relationships)

To earn a 90% or above technique must be followed: begin with tonal area, erase lights, build mid tones and darks Proportion and placement of forms should be accurate Composition must go off all 4 edges 3-d modeling of form must be evident (with a full range of values) Personal solution of choice of emphasis must be evident
