eInfrastructure the international dimension Open Workshop on eInfrastructures Rome, 9th December 2003 eInfrastructure the international dimension Mário Campolargo DG INFSO F3 Research Infrastructure 9th December 2003 "The views expressed in this presentation are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of the European Commission"

The global dimension of eInfrastructures eInfrastructures has been driven in Europe by a strong cooperation between computation/network experts and eScience communities eScience experience will be further applied to eGovernment, eBusiness,… Application and Service Layer Middleware Layer Resource Layer Network layer eInfrastructures

The global dimension of eInfrastructures eScience communities have a global dimension (high energy physics, bio-informatics, digital libraries, …) Application and Service Layer Middleware Layer Resource Layer Network layer Application and Service Layer Middleware Layer Resource Layer Network layer

The global dimension of eInfrastructures Globus, Unicore, Condor,… widespread adoption at international level of these middleware solutions… and, through standardisation such as GGF, moving towards compliance with OGSA… Application and Service Layer Application and Service Layer Middleware Layer Middleware Layer Resource Layer Resource Layer Network layer Network layer

The global dimension of eInfrastructures Resources (national supercomputer facilities, International Organisations heavy instruments, clusters of computers, databases, storage, …) are being brought together in Europe by projects such as GEANT, EGEE and DEISA and in USA by initiatives such as the cyberinfrastructure and Teragrid Application and Service Layer Application and Service Layer Middleware Layer Middleware Layer Resource Layer Resource Layer Network layer Network layer

The global dimension of eInfrastructures GEANT as well as Internet2 or SuperSinet operate high performance networks using the most up to date networking technology, promoting their global interconnection (currently IPv6 enabled and operating at multigigabit level) Application and Service Layer Application and Service Layer Middleware Layer Middleware Layer Resource Layer Resource Layer Network layer Network layer

The global dimension of eInfrastructures In order to review resource access policies, procedures, rules and challenges in major international initiatives, three distinguished speaker will provide their views in this Open Workshop: Dr. Deborah Crawford, Deputy NSF assistant Director for CISE Dr. Alan Blatecky, Executive Director of the S. Diego Super Computer Center Prof. Ken-ichi Miura, Director of the NII Naregi Japanese initiative
