Presentation transcript:

Bell Work! You should have your composition notebook at your desk. Help Harry!

HELP HARRY! Your Task: Build a perch for Harry so he can more easily see around the classroom. You can only use the materials in your supply tub. Your goal is to get Harry as high above the lab table as possible without putting his safety at risk. Work as a team! Use a few minutes to brainstorm and share ideas. You will have 15 minutes to experiment and build.

The Engineering Design Process

TCAP Goals: Identify the tools and procedures needed to test the design features of a prototype. Evaluate a prototype to determine if the engineering design process was successfully applied. Distinguish between the intended benefits and unintended consequences of a new technology. Differentiate between adaptive and assistive engineered products.

Today’s Goals: Become familiar with the steps of the engineering design process. Identify the intended benefits and unintended consequences of a variety of technologies.

Engineers use science to create new technologies. Engineering—the process of creating technology

What is a prototype? Prototype: a test model of the product

Intended Benefits vs. Unintended Consequences

Let’s review… Intended Benefits—meant to promote well-being Unintended Consequences—accidental problems caused by a new invention

CUT HERE

Step One: ASK (Identify a Need) Describe the challenge to be solved, including limits and constraints.

Step Two: IMAGINE and EXPLORE (Develop Possible Solutions) Brainstorm Research Find materials

Step Three: PLAN and DESIGN (Create Prototype) Find a solution Choose one idea and draw or make a model of it.

Step Four: CREATE (Test/Evaluate Prototype) Build a prototype Test the prototype Evaluate

Step Five: IMPROVE Make modifications Look for better ways

Step Six: SHARE IDEAS Communication is important so others can learn from your discoveries.

Here’s an overview…

Let’s be specific…
