1 Module 1 Nature of Engineering
COE Test Review Module 1 Nature of Engineering

2 Review Questions The future of engineering
Determined by engineering trying to design things to fulfill people’s wants and needs An emerging area of engineering is Nanotechnology Engineering problems have More than one solution

3 Review Questions Engineers work In one or more teams
Engineers keep a notebook to document their work so that they have Information to review their designs when problems occur Engineering experience can be gained by Internships In the past 200 years, engineers have specialized into engineering disciplines because Knowledge of science and math and technology has increased

4 Review Questions Engineering work is performed
By teams of engineers distributed in many countries Communication skills Are as important for engineers as technical skills

5 Review Questions The process of implementing a design into society involves social responsibility. Explain this statement. All design that results in a product or service used by society should be evaluated for safety, long-term impact for negative consequences, quality, disposal consequences and moral implications Explain the characteristics of anticipated and unanticipated impacts of engineering implementations Anticipated are those impacts that are expected and solve the problem for which being designed. Unanticipated are those that were not expected or those for which there was not enough testing to determine. Why are some engineering disciplines becoming extinct and others emerging? Problems that engineering solves changes as society evolves and as new tools, materials and techniques are also engineered.

6 Review Questions What is the difference between one engineering and discipline and another. The science and math used in the problem solving and design process is difference What are the characteristics of a good sketch Conveys intended geometry, neat, proportional Technical lettering serves to convey information on a drawing, the lettering should be___________________________________ Uniform, neat, legible Name the 3 views that can represented in a sketch and explain what determines which one is drawn. Perspective, 3dimensional, 2D multi-view. The information needing to be conveyed determines the type of sketch drawn.

7 Review questions The engineering design algorithm has 5 steps, what are they? Identify the problem, criteria and constraints Research the problem Brainstorm ideas and create 3 sketches Evaluate for the best idea and develop a prototype for testing Communicate the solution What is it necessary to create 3 sketches in the design process To prevent tunnel vision focused on only one idea

8 Review questions Engineers need to be good communicators. Name three forms of communication that engineers use. Technical writing, sketching, oral presentation Technical writing is a form of written communication, describe the basic concept of technical writing Technical writing involves the process of written communication that eliminates ambiguity and focuses on identifying the audience, and presenting the appropriate facts in the simplest and clearest form possible.
