Welcome Student SOAR to SOAR

Goals for Today: I can give someone a compliment. Talk through the goals for the day. You may even want your students to summaries what the goals for today are in their notebook.

Quote of the Day: “Compliments cost nothing.” By German Proverb What does this quote mean? Does the compliment “cost” anything to the person receiving giving it? On the next clean piece of paper, have students write their name, date, and class name. Then have them write the following quote. “Compliments cost nothing. By German Proverb” Then have the student write Type 2 and answer the following questions. What does this quote mean? Does the compliment mean nothing to person receiving it to? Once you have given students a couple minutes have them turn and talk their partner. Let them know that one of them will be sharing out what they thought this quote meant. Finally share out what the students think this quote means.

How to Give a Compliment How do we give compliments? What are some compliments we give each other? Today we are going to talk about giving people compliments. A compliment can be something like “I like how the shirt looks on you today.” to “Thank you for opening the door since my hands were full.” They cost you, the person saying them nothing; it means a lot to the person receiving them. Has anyone ever been given a compliment or a pat on the back for doing something? Let students talk about giving and getting the compliments. If there isn’t much discussion have them do a turn and talk with a partner and then bring back to whole group.

Student to Student SOAR Student to Student SOAR is a way to give your classmates a compliment. Thank you for all the great information about telling people how much they mean to you through compliments, a good job, or a pat on the back. I am going to show you how to use the Student to Student SOAR to Awesome we do at Hoyt. We will be doing this in Hawk Time every other week. Go through and model how to write a Student to Student SOAR to Awesome.

Brainstorm In 1 minute list at least 3 people who have done something nice for you. These people deserve a compliment. Open up your notebook and draw a line under the quote of the day. Then I want you to write Type 1. I am going to give you 1 minute to think of 3 or more people that have done something nice and kind for you. Out of those 3 people 2 or more have to be students.

Student to Student SOAR to Awesome Using your list write a Student to Student SOAR to Awesome. Include their name (1st and Last) and their grade level. Now that you have some people in mind pick one or two and write a Student to Student SOAR to Awesome to them. You will then turn them in to me. I will turn them into the office so they will get them.

Student to Student SOAR to Awesome Hoyt Students SOAR I caught ______________________Grade Level______________ (First and last name) doing the most awesome thing ever, and I just wanted to let you know. I had to let the whole world know! People like this make Hoyt a better place one person at a time. Awesome Act Witnessed _________________________________________________ __________________________________ Witness HINT: Have them write the grade and last name of the student so we know who it goes to. Also try to have them move past a student gave me a pencil.

Goals for Today: I can give someone a compliment. Go back over the goals. Did you class reach the goals set for today.
