Presentation transcript:

Classifying Matter

Atom The smallest unit of a substance that keeps the properties of that substance.

constant composition (what it is made up of is the same everywhere) Substance Matter that has a constant composition (what it is made up of is the same everywhere)

Element A substance that has only one type of atom and cannot be decomposed (broken down) to simpler substances. Can be found on the period table! Aluminum Helium

Compound A substance that has two or more different elements. Ratio is fixed. Can be decomposed chemically.

Mixture A physical combination of two or more substances. Each substance keeps its original properties. Can contain different types of matter. Can be separated by physical means.

Heterogeneous Mixture A mixture that is not constant in composition. Can see/identify the individual parts.

Homogeneous Mixture A mixture that looks constant throughout. Also called solutions Bronze (Copper + Tin)

Distillation A process for separating mixtures by evaporating a liquid from a solid or boiling and condensing liquids to separate them.

Separation by Filtration Mixture of a solid and liquid- liquid passes through filter paper and solid remains on paper
