Welcome to 8th Grade Physical Science! Ms. Kelly Orosz Kellyorosz@iusd.org Room 306 Sign in at any table (write the name of your child next to yours)

Students build science understanding using a variety of practices in experiments, discussion, and project-based experiences Students gain science literacy and are able to make meaningful connections with what they are learning Prepare students for high school by helping them gain critical thinking skills, problem solving ability, study skills, and organization skills Make learning fun and instill a passion for science

G8 Science Curriculum Nature of Science: lab safety, measurement, scientific tools, observations, data collection, graphing, Scientific and engineering practices Evolution and Heredity Energy & Waves Forces & Interactions Earth’s Place in the Universe Engineering Design Earth & Human Activity

Grading Science Notebooks = 20% Projects and Labs = 40% Tests and Quizzes = 30% Any unfinished classwork will need to be completed as homework or done in tutorial. Notebook checks happen at least once a trimester 2-5 points are deducted every day the assignment is late. Student will also be expected to come to tutorial Quizzes can be made up during tutorials If a student is absent, they must make up work within one week of absence Communication is very important, so I am always available if there are any concerns or questions

Extracurricular Science Activities Green Team (meet Monday during tutorial) Ask-a-Scientist Night (10/12/17, tentative) Academic Pentathlon (Nov 2015-March 2018) UCI Careers in Science (12/12/17); tentative Science Fair* (2/27/18) Raspberry Pie Team

Honors Recommendation Students earn a solid A all 3 trimesters Participation in science extra curricular activities. (for students who are borderline) Shows understanding of constructing explanation using data and experimental evaluation. Demonstrates good work ethic and completes classwork/homework on time Shows improvement in formal labs done throughout the year
