Nuclear Fusion and Fission
Fission and Fusion are both nuclear reactions that involve the particles in the nucleus of an atom.
MEASURING RADIATION Large doses of radiation are harmful to living tissue. Radiation can be measured with a Geiger counter – a device that measures radioactivity.
Fission and Fusion They could be described as “Big Bang” and “Bigger Bang”.
 In nuclear fission, large atoms are split apart to form smaller atoms, releasing energy.  Fission also produces new neutrons when an atom splits. 

NUCLEAR CHEMISTRY Unit 1 Notes

Introduction: Nuclear Power

2 Types of Nuclear Reactions: FUSION FISSION

FISSION When an atom’s nucleus splits apart Always releases lots of energy Can be forced by “firing” a neutron at the atom Also occurs in nature on its own (Ex. Uranium)

FISSION Chain nuclear fission reaction allow Nuclear Power Plants and nuclear weapons (the atom bomb) to work To the right is the atomic bomb, which operates on uncontrolled nuclear fission chain reactions

FISSION EXAMPLE

FISSION EXAMPLE

NUCLEAR FUSION When 2+ atoms (small) fuse together Always releases lots of energy Also known as thermonuclear reactions

NUCLEAR FUSION Nuclear fusion is how the sun and all other stars create the energy we receive as light and heat

FUSION EXAMPLE

FUSION EXAMPLE This reaction is responsible for creating elements larger than hydrogen

FUSION or FISSION?
