1 Nuclear Energy Fission vs Fusion

2 Atoms Atoms are made of protons, neutrons, and electrons.
Protons and neutrons make up the nucleus of an atom.

3 Nuclear Fission Nuclear reactions create large amounts of energy.
Fission is the splitting of the nucleus of an atom. This releases heat energy that is used to produce electricity.

4 Fuel for Fission Uranium ore is enriched and made into fuel pellets.
Fuel Rods are made from the pellets. Bundles of rods are hit with neutrons which split the atom, release energy, and cause a chain reaction.

5 Fission Neutrons being released hit other U-235 atoms and cause a chain reaction. The reaction can be controlled in the nuclear reactor.

6 Drawbacks to Nuclear Power
Waste products are radioactive and need to be stored for thousands of years. If radiation leaks from the power plants it can cause health problems. Difficult to find long term storage solutions.

7 Nuclear Fusion Energy from the sun is produced by fusion.
Smaller atomic nuclei combine to form larger nuclei. Only happen at very high temperatures 15 million degrees Celsius.
