1 Nuclear Chemistry

2 What are the 2 Types of Nuclear Reactions
Fission Fusion

3 Fission Nucleus must be large
Only atoms with atomic #’s at or above 90 can undergo fission Nucleus is hit with a free neutron causing the atom to split into 2 new and different atoms as well as 3 free neutrons. The free neutrons then hit and split another atom and the process keeps repeating itself.

4 Fission Fission means “to divide”
Nuclear Fission is the process in which an atom’s nucleus is split into 2 nuclei with smaller masses

5 Example of Nuclear Fission
Nuclear Power Plants

6 Nuclear Weapons Atom Bomb or A Bomb Nuclear Submarines

7 Fusion Also known as thermonuclear reactions
Process in which 2 atomic nuclei with low masses are fused into a single nucleus of larger mass

8 Fusion Fusion means “to fuse”
2 low mass nuclei combine or fuse to form a new atom

9 Examples of Fusion The sun is a big fusion reactor
Hydrogen is converted into helium

10 Black Hole

11 Nuclear Weapons Hydrogen Bombs or H - Bombs

12 Isotopes Isotopes – Atoms of the same element that have a different number of neutrons H21 H is the atomic symbol Superscript is the mass number (neutrons + protons) Subscript is the atomic number Can also be written as H-2
