The French Arrive July 1780 French warships appear off New Port, Rhode Island carrying troops Comte de Rochambeau & 5,000 soldiers Washington camped near NYC, watching General Clinton and waiting for second fleet of French ships to attack

CHANGE IN PLANS British Gen. Cornwallis camped in Yorktown, bottled up on a peninsula by Lafayette 1781- French Admiral Francois de Grasse heading towards Chesapeake Bay instead of NY Washington & French secretly march troops 200 miles in 15 days from New York to Virginia Washington & Rochambeau, Lafayette, de Grasses meet near Yorktown

The Siege of Yorktown Washington’s plan works perfectly British General Clinton believes Washington is going to attack in New York 14,000 American & French troops vs. 7,500 Brits and Hessians in Virginia Cornwallis is cornered by troops and French Navy, Clinton helpless
