2 Main Ideas Patriot forces faced many problems in the war in the South
The American Patriots finally defeated the British at the Battle of Yorktown The British and the Americans finally ended the war by signing the Treaty of Paris of 1783 The Big Idea: The war spread to the southern colonies, where the British were finally defeated

3 War in the South British decided to take the fight to the southern states of Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia where there was loyalist support, also planning to free and enlist slaves along the way

4 Brutal Fighting Southern war was brutal, patriot against loyalist
British officer Banastre Tarleton, refused to take prisoners, killing them instead Georgia fell to the Brits in 1778 South Carolina fell in 1780, giving General Clinton one of their biggest victories of the war

5 Guerilla Warfare Francis Marion the “Swamp Fox” began using a swift hit and run style of warfare in the south, known as guerilla warfare, targeting British communication and supply lines

6 Battle of Yorktown Battle of Yorktown: last major battle of the American Revolution With the help of French commander Comte de Rochambeau and a French fleet in Chesapeake Bay, Cornwallis and the British surrendered 8,000 troops

7 The Treaty of Paris 1783: The Treaty of Paris- Great Britain recognized the independence of the United States, also established America’s borders
