What is the EXPOSITION?

The event that causes the conflict or problem.

What is the INCITING INCIDENT?

Events that occur as the character tries to solve the problem.

What is the RISING ACTION?

The point of highest interest, greatest suspense, or most emotion.

What is the CLIMAX?

Events that occur as the character works towards the conclusion.

What is the FALLING ACTION?

The problem has been solved and the loose ends are tied up.

What is the RESOLUTION?

The life lesson of the story. The main idea.

What is the THEME?

The four things that the beginning of the story does.

What is FICTION?

The vantage point.

What is POINT OF VIEW?

The story is told by one of the characters.

What is the FIRST PERSON point of view?

Showing what the character is like through words and actions.

What is INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION?

The story is seen through the eyes of one character but the character is not telling the story.

What is the THIRD PERSON point of view?

The all-knowing point of view.

What is the OMNISCIENT point of view?

Forces that work against the protagonist Forces that work against the protagonist. The person or thing that creates the conflict.

What is the ANTAGONIST?

The main or central character.

What is the PROTAGONIST?

A struggle between opposing forces.

What is CONFLICT?

The place and time that the story occurs.

What is the SETTING?

The overall emotion that the writer creates in the story.

What is MOOD?

This is something that takes place in the character’s mind.

What is INTERNAL CONFLICT?

The uncertainty the reader feels about what will happen next in the story.

What is SUSPENSE?

A writer will tell the reader exactly what a character is like.

What is DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION?

These make it difficult for the character to achieve their goal or solve their problem.

What are COMPLICATIONS?

A person or animal who takes part in a play, story, or other literary work.

What is a CHARACTER?

It hints at future events.

What is FORESHADOWING?

When a character struggles against a group, a character or nature.

What is EXTERNAL CONFLICT?

A discovery of a truth about our own human experience.

What is THEME?

The story’s most emotional moment.

What is the CLIMAX?

Loose ends are tied up and the story is closed.
